Mass Wildlife Considers 3 options

Each of the three alternatives presented by engineering consultants meet the design goals of providing increased capacity, and each solution provides for fish passage. Instead of fixing the dam (#1), Mass Wildlife has chosen option #2:

  1. Fix the dam - make the dam safer without lowering Nye Pond. This solution includes a fish ladder for connectivity to Scorton Creek.

  2. Reduce the dam - lower the pond 3 feet. Reduce the 6.2 acre pond by 1/3, remove 2.2 acres of land underwater and reduce the greater part of the kettle pond to 4’-6’ depth. This solution will make the neck of the pond impassible and there will be no passageway to the main pond. The consultants point out that community opposition could be great. That’s why we must speak out!

  3. Remove the dam. This solution was rejected as not feasible due to community opposition.
